It's not 5/month, so that's not a sustainable possibility.

But I agree, i don't see what the big deal is..seems cheaper if anything.

Re: shopify releases marketplace, redesign, new pricing scheme…

I agree with you but I think they are "cutting out" only a very small group of people. The smallest plan takes only 2% on top of the $24 vs the previous free structure et 3% so if you make $240 a month and up, you save. I'd be curious to see how many shops make less than $240 a month and at the same time can't cut their products to 5 to get the free level. They exist I'm sure, I'm just think it has to be a small number.

Re: shopify releases marketplace, redesign, new pricing scheme…

I guess there's room for another player targeting the business start ups with small turnover on a no fee but commission based approach.

imho they are facing the potential for a JPG like community backlash and need to handle this with kit gloves. There are a lot of people who are exceedingly interested in Shopify because of its differences - the fact that the fees were based on commissions they lowered the hurdles in a start up. Now they've just become the same as anyone else, will there be as much advertising + good words from the community?

Finally I would have to say that I can't see them making the application Open Source at all. Ever.

Re: shopify releases marketplace, redesign, new pricing scheme…

The marketplace is a very Etsy move.

Glad I'm grandfathered in & don't have to think about all this right now. Great to hear your thoughts on it all, too!
